National Energy System Operator

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is the publicly owned body responsible for planning and operating Great Britain's electricity system. Established in 2024 when the system operator function was transferred from National Grid plc to government ownership, NESO manages the balancing of electricity supply and demand across the GB transmission network 24 hours a day. NESO is also leading the reform of grid connections, having reordered the connections queue through the Gate 2 process to prioritise shovel-ready projects needed for the Clean Power 2030 target, and is developing the Strategic Spatial Energy Plan for Great Britain.
